I have been patronizing this eatery for three decades
now and that is the reason why I just cannot get used to calling it by its new
name which is Oakhurst Grill. For some reason, then unknown to me, they (the
owners) all of a sudden changed (in 2007) the name of this original Mr. C′s which
was founded in 1967 by Mr. George Couchell who is also the
founder (early 1980′s) of the relatively new Showmars chain of 20+ area
eateries. His dad (Johnny) is the founder of the former Johnny′s Grill --
now Gus′ Sir Beef located next door. I would also occasionally visit the Beatties
Ford Road location of Mr. C′s when I happened to be on that side of
town. There now sits a Family Dollar Store at the corner of Lasalle
Street and Beatties Ford Road. Now, the only Mr. C′s standing
is located off Highway 29 North just south of Interstate 85 in Concord,
North Carolina. I occasionally visit that location when I am heading
north of the Queen City.
I really get a kick out of visiting this location because it is one of the first restaurants that I frequented after moving to Charlotte back in 1985. In fact, I literally witnessed the male co-owner′s hair turn from dark brunette to almost all grey. My, I say to myself, he is surely getting old. Smile! The husband and wife that run -- or used to run --this place have consistently been nice to me and all the other regulars on each and every visit over the last 30 years. I find that amazing because most of us typically have at least one bad day on a monthly basis.
