Representative Beverly Earle
First Black Female Representative

Representative Beverly M. Earle was born on December 30, 1943 in Greensboro, NC; home of the first sit in movement. She is a graduate of North Carolina A&T State University with a degree in Social Service and has received many civic awards for her care of the elderly, children, and the sick. She has lived in Charlotte, NC, for over thirty years and is the owner of Earle and Associates – founded in 1991. From 1985 to 1991 she owned and operated Beverly’s Frozen Desserts.
Representative Earle is a former employee (Now retired) from Southern Bell [Bell South] where she worked for more than 30 years. Her many civic organizations include the League of Women Voters, Mecklenburg County Women’s Commission, and the National Order of Women Legislators, to name a few; and she is the State Director of Women in Government.
Representative Earle is a Democrat and is the first Black female to be elected to represent a political district (101) in Mecklenburg County and first to serve as the Democratic House Majority Whip. In addition, she is the first Black female to chair the North Carolina Legislative Black Caucus and to co-chair the Appropriations committee. She is currently serving her eighth consecutive term in the North Carolina House of Representatives and currently chairs the Appropriations Subcommittee on Health and Human Services as well as the Mental Health Reform Committee.
Representative Earle is the Vice Chair of the Health Committee, and sits on the Aging, Budget Advisory, Financial Institutions, and Public Utilities Committees. She is up for re-election in November of 2010. In 2007, she was handedly defeated by incumbent Mayor Pat McCrory who in 2009 retired as the longest-serving Mayor of Charlotte, NC, with seven consecutive two-year terms (14 years).
She is a divorced mother of an adult son, Steven Jessup, a godson Tarik Kiley, and two granddaughters. She attends Chapel of Christ the King Episcopal Church.
