Conde Nast Traveler included Ocracoke among its "Most Underrated Islands in the U.S." Ocracoke was one of the suggestions pitched by Visit NC's PR team to an earlier inquiry from the writer about underrated destinations. Of Ocracoke, the online photo gallery noted, "Maybe you know this place as the island where Blackbeard died. You may not know, however, that you can take a haunted tour of the island with an actual Blackbeard descendent, as well as stroll through a colonial British cemetery or see the oldest operating lighthouse in North Carolina. None of that matters a whole lot though, because the natural beauty of this underdeveloped island on the Outer Banks is colloquially said to put visitors into an 'ocracoma.'" Another successful suggestion by Visit NC's PR team resulted in the Travel Channel including Jockey's Ridge State Park for the North Carolina selection in its "50 States of Adventurous State Parks." Of the state park in Nags Head, the online photo gallery explained, "With the tallest natural dune on the East Coast as its centerpiece, Jockey's Ridge State Park is home to the world's largest hang-gliding school. With guidance from instructors, hang-gliders learn to soar on the winds that launched the Wright Brothers into history about five miles to the north. Jockey's Ridge is also a choice place for sunset viewing, kite flying and kiteboarding."
