Real Soul Food!

This eatery is located in a somewhat not-well-known section of the Queen City especially if you are a newcomer. It is situated in what used to be either a Burger King or McDonald’s Restaurant located a stone’s throw away from the expansive Hampshire Hills development and shopping center located due north. This neighborhood is one of the oldest predominately Black/African-American middle class neighborhoods around Charlotte. In fact, a few of my former Duke Power co-workers either live or lived there back in the day when I myself was new to this bustling town. The development does not seem that expansive until you try to find someone’s house without the aid of a Garmin Nuvi or equivalent GPS. Believe it or not, those gizmos did not exist back in the 1980’s and earlier so you were relegated to the directions given to you which were often missing that one turn that if missed would put you in a tail-spin – sort of speaking – and dump you out clear on the other side of The Plaza

I once worked this area as a distribution engineer with good ole’ Duke Power and in the process learned some pretty neat shortcuts to avoid rush hour traffic. One of them takes you from The Plaza through Hampshire Hills and dumps you out on Orr Road. It took me quite a few trials to get that one straight. I also remember donating one of those bouncy rubber things that young people love to play in for the Northeast Community’s annual outdoor festival. That was when I published a local business directory called The Black Pages which was later stolen from me by an unscrupulous attorney and the courts. God Bless America! On a lighter note, one of our advertisers was The Medicine Shoppe which – believe it or not – is still there and right across the street from this 250-Watt High Pressure Sodium Vapor outdoor light with a 24-foot arm that I had installed (Not literally) while employed by Duke Power Company. That means we both knew what we were doing. Smile! Well, enough for reflections.

A lot of folks confuse this establishment with the one on North Graham St. (North Charlotte) or the one on Wilkinson Blvd. located near the airport in southwest Charlotte. This one is Floyd’s II; somewhere there is a connection but I forgot what it is. I stopped by this place after one of our QCT Charlotte Black Heritage Tourstm on a Saturday in the middle of July. Their set up is cafeteria-style and my server was an older woman who was very friendly and the cashier was a younger gentleman who was equally friendly. In fact, the customers that were in line with me were also very friendly. The rapper Ice Cube would say that that day was a good day. It was nice to see that their sanitation code was 95.5 as well.

I chose the beef ribs (Which are hard to find in Charlotte) because they were mostly meat and huge portions there for the taking. The mac and cheese was among the best that I have tasted in North Carolina because they were cheesy (Like I like them), not too soft, watery, or hard; but just right. Not too many area eateries get that combination right. The collard greens tasted original and homemade meaning that they were not too bitter, or sweet, not too limp, or stiff; but just right. Excellent! This is another dish that gives most area eateries a hard time getting right. Rounding out my meal was of course the corn bread which was not too sweet, or bland; but just right. It too tasted original and homemade. My total bill was $10.08; a bit on the high side but well worth the palatable investment.

If you are a regular reader of my reviews you will know that it is rare for me not to find something to be picky about. Not in this case; this is real soul food reminiscent of the kind my late grandma Meddie P. used to make back in Miami. May she rest in peace!
