I found out about this eatery by sheer happenstance.
It just happened to open in the same building that used to house one of my
favorite bar and grills -- O' Charley's. I frequent the Matthews, NC,
area and was quite disappointed when I learned that that location was no longer
open. My favorite dish there was their Appetizer Combo Platter that
includes a few of my favorites like Chicken Tenders, Spicy Jack
Cheese Wedges, and Loaded Potato Skins topped with cheddar and Monterrey
Jack cheese and bacon; yummy, how can anyone top that! It is still hard to
believe that all that goodness just went away.
The somewhat sleepy town of Matthews (formerly
Fullwood and Stumptown) was incorporated in 1875 and was built up around
the railroad which would stop in what today is the heart of downtown near the
new town hall, library, shops, and a few bars. In fact the town's namesake was Edward
Watson Matthews who was a director in the Seaboard Air Line
Railroad (formerly Central Carolina Railroad) company. They opened a museum
on North Trade Street that details the history of this town that is now
considered a bedroom community of Charlotte, NC, which is less
than 12 miles west. Just east of Downtown is one of the oldest Black
communities in the U.S. called Crestdale, formerly Tank Town
because of the huge water tank that was located near the railroad tracks.
It dates back to the 1860's and the town's unofficial Mayor was Mr. Sam Boyd; also covered in the museum. Sadly, the old cemetery where quite a few of Mr. Boyd's relatives are buried is in jeopardy of being developed. It is located just across the street from the Family Dollar distribution warehouse along Old Monroe Road (John Street) near Wal-Mart. Another mega-store, Harris-Teeter groceries is headquartered in town and in early 2014 merged with Kroger out of Cincinnati, OH.
