Royal Castle Restaurant Miami, Fl. Review Pic

As a rule we have in past editions typically reviewed local eateries that would fit the category of a mom and pop operation. Although Royal Castle was at one point in time part of a major conglomerate chain of restaurants throughout South Florida, Georgia, Ohio, and Louisiana -- dating back to the late 1930’s; this one is the sole survivor of more than 180 locations which started right here in my hometown Miami, Florida.

As with most all southern businesses that opened in the south before the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960’s, the Royal Castle chain was for whites only in terms of dining and employment. Ironically, the sole surviving chain is now Black-owned by Mr. James Brimberry who was one of the first persons of color hired during the 1960’s Civil Rights Movement. He also picketed local segregated stores like Burdines that did not allow Blacks/African-Americans until he joined the Army to serve a then segregated America.

My personal experience with this eatery dates back to my high school years and after we moved a mile south of this location into the now Gladeview neighborhood. One of our Black High School Rat Pack members got a job here and we would frequently congregate to talk jive, reminisce, and plot our next fantastic hood adventure like hoping on the back of a city bus to get around town; just like the cats from Cooley High-- the movie.

I also remember riding past this eatery on Christmas Day when I first heard the -- now hit -- September (1971) by the now legendary Earth Wind and Fire group featuring Maurice White and Philip Bailey. I too left for the Army, in 1978, but each time I come back to visit I just have to stop in or look to see if this place was still in operation. I had not visited Miami since 1992 -- while here on our QCT Miami In May Trip™ -- and to my surprise this eatery was indeed still in operation and all my fond memories from my high school dayz still intact. And now learning the history of this particular location gives me a lot more to talk and write about, and to be proud that a man who once could not dine or work here is now the owner of the last Royal Castle eatery which is open 24 hours.

I decided to stop through one morning and check out their breakfast since I had never been there during that time. My server was cordial and very casual as I placed my order at the counter. The dining area was clean and my order was up in a blazing five minutes partly because they were not too busy at that time. I ordered the pork chop and egg special with grits and toast which totaled $5.87 which included a $0.25 credit card charge and taxes. I just noticed the credit card charge while writing this article, however, the price with that charge is still not bad for a full breakfast.

Some smaller merchants add that fee to offset their cost of processing your card which can typically run anywhere from 2% to more than 5% of the total bill. Patrons have the option of paying via cash and they even furnish an ATM (Automated Teller Machine) if you need to withdraw cash which can charge $2 - $3 plus whatever your bank charges; so that extra $0.25 they charge does not seem so bad after all. As far as my meal goes, my pork chop was nice and tender and made even tastier when I added their special sauce; my grits, however, were slightly bland but okay; and my scrambled eggs okay as well.

Given that this eatery specializes in burgers and fries, I decided on a return trip to update myself on that experience since it had been nearly four decades since my last visit while in high school. On that note, I ordered their specialty Castle Burger Plate that comes with fries and a soft drink -- I chose their specialty root beer soda. My order was up in about ten minutes and my bill totaled $11.16 which again included the $0.25 credit card charge and taxes. I must admit that that price is pretty steep for burgers but I guess it’s because they are not classified as a fast food joint.

Anyway, my fries were a light golden yellow in color and perfectly crisp on the outside and tender and tasty on the inside; while my burgers were just as tasty as nearly four decades ago with their very unique flavor and just the right blend of onion bits. My root beer soda was just as superb and old fashion as before and the six burgers that came with my meal were too much to consume in one setting so in the doggy bag they went to be re-heated for lunch the next day. Even re-heated, they still maintained their unique flavor.

If you have a choice of meals I would highly recommend the lunch and/or dinner menu which, after all, is what this place has been famous for since the late 1930’s.
