Ella Butler Scarborough was born and raised in Sumter County, South Carolina, in 1952. She is the great-niece of Dr. Mary McLeod-Bethune (Founder of Bethune-Cookman College in Daytona Beach, Florida), and daughter of a Baptist Minister. In 1963 -at the age of 11 - she, her mother, and siblings were jailed along with over 300 other protestors for walking in front of the all white Sumter Theater.
They were subsequently tortured with cattle prods and some knocked out cold during their two week incarceration. Ms. Scarborough graduated from South Carolina State University and was shot at, attacked by dogs, and repelled with fire hoses during the Orangeburg Massacre in 1968 during the height of the Civil Rights Movement.
