Still The Best!

This park was the fourth stop on my world wind tour of Disney's fabulous theme parks in the Orlando area of Central Florida -- my home State. I have previously visited and reported on my visits to the Magic Kingdom, Epcot, and Animal Kingdom; and have reviewed the Mystic Dunes in Celebration, Fl., and the Holiday Inn in Lake Buena Vista (will publish in future edition). As I mentioned in my Magic Kingdom piece I have been coming to this area of Central Florida since the early 1970's when most of what is here today was part of swamp land and miles and miles of orange groves. I liken what happened here with the spectacular emergence and growth of the Las Vegas area of Nevada which was mostly desert land until mobster Bugsy Siegel -- like Walt Disney but with a sinister twist -- had a vision in 1946 when he opened the swank Flamingo hotel and gaming resort.

QCT Disney Hollywood Studios PicMy visit to Disney's Hollywood Studio's took place on the second half of my day which included an earlier visit to Animal Kingdom. I have been a fan of great movies since watching them as a kid on Sundays when black and white classics like Hercules (1958), Jason and the Argonauts (1963), and The Ten Commandments (1956) would be featured as a matinee. I would also look forward to watching the Wonderful World of Disney movies on Sunday night which included the classic Wizard of OZ (1939). It was my love for great cinema that inspired me to complete a college-level course in movie appreciation while attending Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte, NC, back in the 1990's. Our syllabus required us to watch and evaluate movie classics such as Vertigo (starring Jimmy Stewart and Kim Novak [1958]), M (for murder starring Martin W. Harrow and Howard Da Silva [1951]), Citizen Kane (by Orson Welles [1941]), and Do The Right Thing (by Spike Lee [1989]).

The second half of my adventurous day began by hoping on the Disney bus at about 2:15 P.M. from Animal Kingdom. I arrived at Hollywood Studios just 15 minutes later at about 2:30 P.M. As mentioned before, these Disney buses are really nice (late model), comfortable (AC working), and come with a PA system that welcomes you to their parks as well as provide useful information. Their drivers are very friendly and helpful as well which sets the stage for the magic that guests are about to experience. My job as a tour director for 23 plus years with Queen City Tourstm and Travel helps me evaluate good transportation services. After clearing ticketing and security I did my usual and located a map of the park to plot my strategy of visiting as many places in the shortest period of time without having to back track.

QCT Disney Hollywood Studios PicThis park is laid out in typical Disney fashion which includes a long corridor of shops and restaurants along the main street that eventually unfolds into a somewhat circular pattern. You can also find an information booth that also provides vehicles like strollers and carts for those that need assistance to negotiate the park. It is also nice that Disney will post characters near the entrance to immediately grab your attention and let you know that they are indeed in the business of entertainment. My first order of business was to locate a restroom (always located near the entrance) for a pit stop and then find an outlet to charge my Android phone. One of these days I am going to invest in one of those back-up battery chargers because of the large volume of pics and videos that I shoot while covering attractions. I was able to recharge in a Starbucks Restaurant while enjoying a very fruity beverage because I am not that much of a coffee or Latte' drinker. The stop also gave me a chance to people watch the many different guests from all walks of life and cultures enjoying the common art of entertainment Disney style.

QCT Disney Hollywood Studios PicAfter studying their park map I decided to negotiate it in my usual counter-clockwise fashion which guided me to my first stop; the Star Wars movie presentation which details the making of that blockbuster movie. There was no wait to get in so that was really Kool. Next up I just had to experience some of what I saw in the movie by joining the Star Tours ride crew which is a stationary fighter simulator that gives you the real impression that you are at the helm during a galactic gun battle against the enemy. The wait was only about 5 to 10 minutes and the ship actually moves up and down and side to side to create a very real battle scenario complete with life-like graphics and even C-3PO as your comrade. You want to make sure you do this one before a meal. Smile!

Next up was a stop at one of my all-time favorite adventure movies the original Indiana Jones (1981) starring Harrison Ford. Every time I hear that theme song it makes me want to re-join the Army as a Paratrooper on a night jump over Sicily DZ (Drop Zone) with a low ceiling (clouds) -- NOT! I at least thought about it though. I was lucky enough to be one of the first to enter this attraction because I arrived about 30 minutes before show time. This way-too-Kool attraction is actually a replica of the movie set that includes props from the best scenes of the original version like the classic giant rolling stone. I wondered if that stone was real and what would have happened if the trap door did not open in time? Anyhow, that scene went off without a hitch -- thank God. They also chose volunteers from our audience to participate in the final scene that included a jeep flipping over, bad guys getting shot, and multiple explosions. I am retired from that type of life but it was really entertaining watching others endure the experience.

QCT Disney Hollywood Studios PicI left that 30-minute show with a lot of adrenalin pumping so it was time to make another pit stop at the nearby men's room which actually resembled the ones we used in the field while training in the military. More Koolness! It was time for me to slow down a bit so I decided to opt for a more subtle adventure next by joining The Great Movie Ride which takes you through various movie sets from classic Disney movies for about 22 minutes. The wait to get in was only about 15 minutes and at one point on the ride one of the characters actually hopped aboard our vehicle and stood right next to me. He was playing the role of a gangster and I was really tempted to say something but decided against it because I did not want to disrupt his scene like some unruly hecklers.

QCT Disney Hollywood Studios PicThe last stop on my whirlwind tour of Hollywood Studios was one that I really looked forward to -- Walt Disney: One Man's Dream. On my way over I was stopped by one of the park staff as well as all others around me because of a procession that included Shore Troopers and the man himself Chewbacca who looks much bigger in person. Once in the Walt Disney attraction I took my time and slowly moved from one display to another leading up to the theater to watch the film. I got a chance to learn about how he grew up (from age 5) in a small town in Marceline, Missouri, was a poor farm boy but had a very active imagination. It really impressed me that he believed in his dream enough to take night courses at the Chicago Art Institute the city where he was born in 1901. In addition, he had a brother (Roy) that believed in his dream enough to become part of it as opposed to destroying it out of jealously like so many negative friends, siblings and family members do.

QCT Disney Hollywood Studios PicDisney was always on the cutting edge of integrating the latest technologies into his entertainment vehicles and was first to use animatronics as in the case of the Hall of Presidents at the Magic Kingdom. As stated in my previous article; my first visit to the Hall as a kid back in the early 1970's is forever etched into my mind as one of the most impressive Disney creations to date. The way those statues move is mind-boggling and some may even think that they are actually real people but the stripped down version of the President Lincoln robot should quash that theory. I guess they are currently working on the censored Trump addition. Smile! The Walt Disney movie lasted about 20 minutes and included a segment on how one of his early partners literally stole one of his early characters -- Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. His subsequent rise is an endearing motivator for me as I have been ripped off several times of intellectual property rights courtesy of very bad judges. I estimate that I have lost over $2-million-dollars (U.S.) in revenue. Frown!

QCT Disney Hollywood Studios PicAll in all it was another fantastic adventure at a Disney park and this go round I did not have to use their Fast Pass as my longest wait time was just 15 minutes. I departed Disney's Hollywood Studios at approximately 7:30 P.M. (EST) and was bid farewell by a very nice gentleman at the entrance/exit. I then hopped back on the contract shuttle bus at about 8:22 P.M. for my return trip to the Holiday Inn Hotel Lake Buena Vista (review pending). They were only 2 minutes off of their advertised departure time of 8:20 P.M. and this time the A.C. was indeed working on their older model coach.
