This park was the fourth stop on my world wind tour of Disney's fabulous theme parks in the Orlando area of Central Florida -- my home State. I have previously visited and reported on my visits to the Magic Kingdom, Epcot, and Animal Kingdom; and have reviewed the Mystic Dunes in Celebration, Fl., and the Holiday Inn in Lake Buena Vista (will publish in future edition). As I mentioned in my Magic Kingdom piece I have been coming to this area of Central Florida since the early 1970's when most of what is here today was part of swamp land and miles and miles of orange groves. I liken what happened here with the spectacular emergence and growth of the Las Vegas area of Nevada which was mostly desert land until mobster Bugsy Siegel -- like Walt Disney but with a sinister twist -- had a vision in 1946 when he opened the swank Flamingo hotel and gaming resort.
My visit to Disney's Hollywood Studio's took place on the second half of my day which included an earlier visit to Animal Kingdom. I have been a fan of great movies since watching them as a kid on Sundays when black and white classics like Hercules (1958), Jason and the Argonauts (1963), and The Ten Commandments (1956) would be featured as a matinee. I would also look forward to watching the Wonderful World of Disney movies on Sunday night which included the classic Wizard of OZ (1939). It was my love for great cinema that inspired me to complete a college-level course in movie appreciation while attending Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte, NC, back in the 1990's. Our syllabus required us to watch and evaluate movie classics such as Vertigo (starring Jimmy Stewart and Kim Novak [1958]), M (for murder starring Martin W. Harrow and Howard Da Silva [1951]), Citizen Kane (by Orson Welles [1941]), and Do The Right Thing (by Spike Lee [1989]).
The second half of my adventurous day began by hoping on the Disney bus at about 2:15 P.M. from Animal Kingdom. I arrived at Hollywood Studios just 15 minutes later at about 2:30 P.M. As mentioned before, these Disney buses are really nice (late model), comfortable (AC working), and come with a PA system that welcomes you to their parks as well as provide useful information. Their drivers are very friendly and helpful as well which sets the stage for the magic that guests are about to experience. My job as a tour director for 23 plus years with Queen City Tourstm and Travel helps me evaluate good transportation services. After clearing ticketing and security I did my usual and located a map of the park to plot my strategy of visiting as many places in the shortest period of time without having to back track.
This park is laid out in typical Disney fashion which includes a long corridor of shops and restaurants along the main street that eventually unfolds into a somewhat circular pattern. You can also find an information booth that also provides vehicles like strollers and carts for those that need assistance to negotiate the park. It is also nice that Disney will post characters near the entrance to immediately grab your attention and let you know that they are indeed in the business of entertainment. My first order of business was to locate a restroom (always located near the entrance) for a pit stop and then find an outlet to charge my Android phone. One of these days I am going to invest in one of those back-up battery chargers because of the large volume of pics and videos that I shoot while covering attractions. I was able to recharge in a Starbucks Restaurant while enjoying a very fruity beverage because I am not that much of a coffee or Latte' drinker. The stop also gave me a chance to people watch the many different guests from all walks of life and cultures enjoying the common art of entertainment Disney style.
After studying their park map I decided to negotiate it in my
usual counter-clockwise fashion which guided me to my first stop; the Star
Wars movie presentation which details the making of that blockbuster movie.
There was no wait to get in so that was really Kool. Next up I just had
to experience some of what I saw in the movie by joining the Star Tours
ride crew which is a stationary fighter simulator that gives you the real
impression that you are at the helm during a galactic gun battle against the
enemy. The wait was only about 5 to 10 minutes and the ship actually
moves up and down and side to side to create a very real battle scenario
complete with life-like graphics and even C-3PO as your comrade. You
want to make sure you do this one before a meal. Smile!
