Bernard Mountain Trail NC Opening

On Friday June 16, 2023, Visit NC's Amanda Baker was in Old Fort and was part of the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Bernard Mountain Trail. The new trail marks an important milestone in the ongoing 42-mile trail expansion project in the Old Fort area. The collaborative efforts of Camp Grier's G5 Trail Collective, Eagle Market Streets Development Corporation, People on the Move Old Fort, and the U.S. Forest Service Grandfather Ranger District, known as the Catawba Vale Collaborative, as well as funding support from the McDowell County TDA have made this trail expansion possible. Baker spoke to how the diverse coalition of non-profit groups, individual citizens, government agencies and businesses in Old Fort are harnessing the power of adventure tourism and leading the way in redefining rural economic development through outdoor recreation. In addition, she congratulated the Old Fort Trails project for leveraging the state's natural riches in a sustainable way with authenticity and foresight.
