Sweet Potatoes Restaurant; Winston-Salem, NC
A Unique Twist on Southern Cuisine!

I learned of this eatery from a business associate that used to work for Visit Charlotte that is now employed by Visit Winston-Salem. We met here for a business lunch after I learned that my suggested spot (Big Mama’s) was not open that time of day. I was a bit concerned about the location being downtown and the issue of parking but to my surprise it was not that much of a problem for me as I found a metered spot along the street and within the same block. Another surprise was the fact that it only cost .25 cents to park for an hour as opposed to the 15 minutes you get in the Queen City – Charlotte, NC.
Upon arrival I was greeted by a very polite Maître D’ who kindly assisted me to the table where my party had already been seated. I had been quite a few years before we had seen each other so needless to say we had to catching up to do on the latest industry gossip. It was then that Diane Brice informed me that she landed her position in the Twin City with a referral from Mr. Melvin Tennant, former Visit Charlotte President/CEO and now Visit Minneapolis head.
The interior décor of this establishment was very fancy and the jazz playing in the background added a sense of laid-backness to the Mood Indigo. Our young male server was very friendly and helpful as he explained the lunch specials in great detail. The menu selections were completely germane to this particular establishment and its low country theme rich in South Carolina/Gullah history. For starters I ordered the chicken soup – since it was winter time in February – which was delicious and genuinely tasted homemade and not out of the grocery store chef can. Ms. Brice ordered the fried green tomatoes with lettuce; which were also very tasty as she allowed me to sample a bite. I also ordered a rare bologna sandwich that was delivered thick and also very tasty.
The meal total for two came to $30.53 which is a bit pricy for common folks but well worth the palatable pleasures and experience. My only criticism is the fact that I was actually charged $40.21 while there and had to call back after noticing the billing error after returning to my office. It turns out I was being charged for someone else’s meal. The manager was very kind and apologetic as she handled the matter expeditiously.
