A Touch of Cuba
Hallandale Beach, Florida

Es Muy Bueno!
I came across this place by happenstance while
conducting contract transportation services in the Broward County area
of South Florida. The Hallandale area can be very busy at times
because of its very popular beach which attracts tourist from all over the
world and locals who want to take advantage of the same amenities that
snowbirds and travelers have come great distances to enjoy. I remember coming
here as a teenager with my late cousin Ken (R.I.P.) and us both
commenting about the traffic way back in the 1970's during the Memorial
Day weekend when most locals hit the area beaches. Folks in that traffic
can be entertaining as well due to the long waits and drawbridges opening and
closing to let the boats pass through. As such, it is not uncommon to see
scantily clad women, or men, exit their vehicles to perform a dance routine
while being egged on by the forced audience waiting in traffic. These days you
can probably pull up footage from some of these impromptu dance routines on the
Internet.
Hallandaleis also
famous for being the home of two very popular gaming casinos; Mardi Gras
and Gulfstream Park which also features horse racing, shopping, bars,
and restaurants. I am not that much of a gamer but these facilities attract
them from all over the world. I typically stick to the penny slots just to kill
time or sometimes I will entertain myself watching others lose their money. It
is not uncommon to see a gamer with several thousand dollars in the slot
machine only to lose it by the time I make my spectator rounds. Both casinos
are located off Federal Highway which is part of U.S. 1, a main
thoroughfare from Jacksonville down to Key West, Florida. Hallandale
is also a great place for Manatee
watching from April through October.
Back to the matter at hand. One of the challenges to patronizing a Cuban restaurant is sometimes it is difficult to communicate with some of the employees whose ingles no es muy bueno (English is not very good). That was not the case during my visits to this particular eatery during the breakfast hours. The place is small and parking can be scarce but I found a spot okay. They have dining tables on the inside and outside but I chose to order a take out before heading over to the library in Hollywood for research for our South Florida tours.
I ordered the $4.99 (without tax) breakfast special which includes huevos revueltos (scrambled eggs), salchicha (sausage), hash browns, and hot cocoa. I checked out their bano para hombres (men's restroom) while awaiting my order and it was small but very clean. I also entertained myself by perusing their pictures and Cuban artifacts that adorn their walls. I was hoping to hop a ship for Havana but the current U.S. government administration is making that trip more and more difficult.
My order was up in about
ten minutes which is not bad considering the crowd that was developing. My meal
was presented quite well which is the first indication that I may be in for a
treat. In addition, I especially like the little Cuban flag stuck in my
sausage. My eggs were light and tasty and scrambled to perfection, my hash
browns were not too greasy or overcooked and very tasty as well; my sausage the
same, and my hot cocoa light with just enough sugar to complement a well
prepared breakfast; my favorite meal of the day.
I enjoyed this eatery so much that I placed
them on my regular schedule for breakfast while working in South Florida
for Queen
City Tourssm.
