The state-wide observance of February as Black History Month kicked off early with the 13th Annual African American Cultural Celebration in Raleigh at the N.C. Museum of History. As part of the festival, Tourism Development Manager Andre Nabors moderated the panel discussion "Black Business in North Carolina." Panelists included Raymond Pierce, director of Mechanics and Farmers Bank and its parent company, Mechanics and Farmers Bancorp Inc.; Robert J. Brown, founder, chairman and CEO of B&C Associates Inc.; and Andrea Harris, president and co-founder of the N.C. Institute of Minority Economic Development. The panel focused on the history of African-American business and major issues faced by business owners in the past and in the present. The African American Cultural Celebration was hosted by the N.C. Dept. of Cultural Resources. This year's theme was "From Jubilee to Justice," in recognition of the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation as well as the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The festival boasted more than 75 outstanding presenters that included musicians, storytellers, writers, dancers, chefs and craftspeople.
