On
August 20, 1998, the
Interfaith
Pilgrimage stopped through
Charlotte as part of their
journey from
Boston to
West Africa. The
Pilgrims re-traced the
Middle Passage slave
trade routes as they prayed for racial healing and atonement for past
institution of Slavery in the
United States,
South
America, and
Europe. While in
Charlotte, the
Pilgrims took a customized
Black Heritage Tour™
of
Charlotte and
Mecklenburg County.
Among the sites visited by the
Pilgrims was a former
Slave church and three existing
Slave
cemeteries. Each year,
Queen City
Tourssm and Travel invites you to experience the
re-creation of this special
Charlotte Black Heritage Tour™
and Pilgrimage as individuals during the months of
February -
Black History Month, and
June -
Juneteenth.
Visit three existing
Slave cemeteries, a former
Slave church, and over
50 other sites of
Charlotte Black/African-American history on this tour. Tours are
scheduled daily in
February -
Black History Month, and
June -
Juneteenth - at
10:00 AM and
1:30 PM. Each tour lasts
three hours and departs from
The Market at 7th Street in
Uptown Charlotte located at
224 East 7th
Street, next to the
Lynx Blue Line Light Rail
Station.

This event supports the
Pilgrimage
Scholarship established in
2008 in honor of the late
Pastor Jeff
Lowrance of
Hopewell Presbyterian Church and
Civil Rights Hero Dr. Reginald Armistice Hawkins. Each year a
college student studying or preparing to study
African-American
history is awarded this scholarship and must maintain at least a
3.0 GPA. In addition, seats are donated by individuals,
organizations, and companies that realize the importance of our
underprivileged youth learning their history as opposed to becoming a part
of negative history.
